The launch of The Jicker Man - dystopian fantasy by Ben Mears

Clevedon is no stranger to writer Ben Mears, who also earlier this year picked up an award for the fantastic, supportive network he has created, the #Coastal #Networkers. This is where I found myself this morning, being treated to a book launch as a special part of the meeting of kind, like-minded business people.

And what a treat it was! I can’t wait to delve into The Jicker Man – a book which is standalone, or can be read as part of the collection of books Ben has successfully published alongside running a busy #graphic #design business, The Dream Loft.

This morning we heard about the #dystopian, #fantasy world, akin to Victorian England, where the characters find themselves, and the challenge of writing from a perspective of someone who was uneducated. The world-building brings us to a war-torn place, with a society that has been “melted down” and the book weaves together #monsters, #magic and #myth.

Ben Mears read some excerpts from his latest novel and the carefully-crafted language was clearly evident, showing the skill of this creative writer. Inspired partly by a puppy their family took on during lockdown, the main character has a similar relationship with his dog.

I particularly can’t wait to get to know the Gaupers – these ghost-like creatures who can read your thoughts and will judge you accordingly. This book holds appeal for young adults too and unlike the previous series, is more fantasy than murder mystery.

Ben Mears said:

“I was delighted to launch my latest novel at the networking event I’m so passionate about, and very grateful to Orion Abbot-Davis for giving my first review. Writing can be quite a lonely place at times, but having this fantastic network in Clevedon makes it all worthwhile.”

So what’s next for Mears? Developing the #screenplay to get the attention of Peter Jackson! This visual storytelling would play very well on screen, and Mears has all the tools in his trade to make that happen, so watch this space!

Ben Mears spoke in the fireside chat at River Axe Media’s new networking event for marketers and media professionals – you can register here for the next event.

Ben also spoke at Books on the Hill on 13 September.

New me

Well, what to talk about today? I just want to share that I feel truly blessed as I now have not one, but two fantastic jobs! So I've hung up my freelance hat for now, but don't worry I will be back! Maybe in a couple of years or so, I'll just see how things pan out. So I'm working in the public sector in two jobs about healthcare.  I'm still navigating my mental health at work and still have very bad days, but slowly I'm starting to rebuild my career and with it my confidence. I can do this!

Rollercoaster

I've been reflecting a lot about my career lately and all the twists and turns it's taken in the last few years, especially since having my daughter. I've experienced a toxic work environment, redundancy, a need to change jobs due to ill health and a huge reduction in hours for my husband due to his M.E., but despite the odds my freelance business has thrived, I've secured a great part-time job and we've managed to keep a roof over our heads.  Also my dad just came out of palliative care as he's doing so well. We are survivors us Mitchells (maiden name). Well, Jacksons too - my Mother-in-Law was just given an MBE for her charity she set up due to a really impossible situation when she was denied contact with her first grandchild. Life takes us through many ups and downs, particularly as someone with bipolar and menopause, but it's how you respond that counts.  Just thought I'd share my musings as I thought you might like to see my personal side. Winter resolutions

So I haven't succeeded with any of my autumn goals - life gets in the way and all too often I put everyone's needs above my own. So that has to change. From December I'm setting intentions to stick to: 1. Going to do a dance or exercise class each week 2. I'm going to make time for my marriage 3. I'm going to reduce my working hours
